NBA rescinds incorrect foul on Jayson Tatum in Celtics’ win over Timberwolves

The technical foul Jayson Tatum picked up during the second half of Thursday night’s Celtics win should not have been called, according to the NBA.

After reviewing the call, the league on Friday rescinded the technical foul on Tatum, which occurred in the final minute of the third quarter in Boston’s 118-115 win at Minnesota.

Tatum was T’d up for his reaction to a shooting foul on teammate Luke Kornet, granting the Timberwolves an additional free throw that aided their comeback bid. The Wolves overcame a 13-point third-quarter deficit to take the lead in the fourth, but Boston survived thanks to strong fourth quarters from Tatum and Derrick White and costly late misses from Minnesota star Anthony Edwards.

Had it stood, the technical foul would have been the sixth of the season on Tatum, tied for fourth-most in the NBA. Accumulating 16 techs during a single regular season triggers an automatic one-game suspension.

Tatum tallied 33 points (16-for-27 from the floor, 6-for-17 from 3-point range), nine assists, eight rebounds and three steals in Thursday’s win, helping to carry the Celtics while starters Jaylen Brown and Kristaps Porzingis sat out with injuries.

The Celtics will visit the Houston Rockets on Friday night. The team listed Brown (right shoulder strain) and Porzingis (left ankle sprain) as questionable for the game and ruled out Al Horford, resting the veteran big man on the second night of a back-to-back.
