The best things about starting a new year
Even if you’re exhausted from holiday shopping and hosting, there are always a few great things about the turnover to a new year. Consider these:
1. All the new movies and books and shows on the horizon. Every year brings a slew of cultural heavyweights to look forward to. From another “Bridget Jones” film and another “Jurassic Park” (this one starring Scarlett Johansson) to a second “Wicked,” the year’s screens will be filled with tempting flicks. Likewise our TVs: “The Gilded Age” and “Hacks” are coming back and a new one I can’t wait for from Netflix called “The Four Seasons” starring Tina Fey and Steve Carell.
2. Leftover caviar. Is there ever leftover caviar, you might ask? Sometimes there is. And when that happens, put it on omelets! Put it on pancakes with sour cream! And if there isn’t any left over? Well, then remember how darn delicious it was and order some more from the local caviar gurus at Island Creek Oysters (shop.islandcreekoysters.com/collections/caviar).
3. Use those holiday gift cards. It’s extra nice to prolong the holiday love by shopping for cool stuff after the fact. So hop on into the shops or on the web and just let the fun begin. Without any guilt — because, after all, you’re just making sure that card doesn’t get wasted.
4. Long winter naps. The rest of the year — all spring, summer, fall, and holiday season — we rush around like mad, getting everything on our to-do lists done. That can still happen in the winter, too. But on the stormiest snow days, when everything shuts down, we sometimes get the glory of nap time. Tuck yourself in and live it up.
5. Time for a makeover. Whether it’s a new haircut, a color change, or a makeup glow-up, the change of years is always a good reason to take the plunge into a new look. So start checking beauty websites for inspiration, and talk to local beauty experts and explore what works best for you.
7. Make resolutions. The promises held by making much-needed changes to our lives still holds a big allure — even when we know how difficult those changes can be to make. There are lots of resources out there to help, start hitting the internet for inspiration and aspirations.
8. Give yourself a break. Sometimes we realize our goals just weren’t what we really wanted. And if that’s the case, doesn’t it feel pretty good to let go and focus our efforts elsewhere?
Welcome to the joy of giving something a shot, finding out it’s not for you, and saying, “No, thanks” and “Yes, please” to other opportunities instead in the year ahead.
