Celtics add Jaylen Brown to injury report ahead of Western Conference trip

Jaylen Brown picked up a new injury during the Celtics’ New Year’s Eve rout of the Toronto Raptors.

Brown appeared to injure his right shoulder early in the 125-71 victory at TD Garden. After head coach Joe Mazzulla lifted his starters at the start of the fourth quarter, a team trainer wrapped the shoulder in a large ice pack.

A day later, Boston added Brown to its injury report, listing him as questionable for Thursday night’s road game against the Minnesota Timberwolves with a right shoulder sprain.

Brown missed four games with a hip injury early in the season and another because of illness in early December. He’s appeared in 13 straight contests and 22 of the Celtics’ last 23.

The NBA Finals MVP played a season-low 25 minutes against the Raptors, finishing with 12 points, nine rebounds, three assists and one steal. He’s on pace for career highs in assists, steals and free-throw attempts per game while averaging 24.4 points, second-most on the team behind Jayson Tatum’s 28.3.

The Celtics also listed center Kristaps Porzingis as questionable for Thursday’s game at Minnesota. Porzingis sat out the last three games after spraining his left ankle in Boston’s Christmas Day loss to Philadelphia.

Ideally, Porzingis would be healthy enough to play either Thursday night or Friday in Houston, as he and fellow big man Al Horford both typically sit out one end of back-to-backs. The Timberwolves matchup kicks off the Celtics’ first Western Conference road trip of the season, with games in Oklahoma City and Denver to follow on Sunday and next Tuesday, respectively.
