Xavier Landrum rushes for 154 yards, fuels TechBoston to victory

DORCHESTER – With the Joseph Mason Cup on the line, TechBoston did everything in its power to keep it in house after getting it back last season over Boston City League rival Latin Academy.

A strong run game in the second half and a couple turnovers forced in the first half were just enough to lift the Bears over the Dragons 32-26 at Roberts Field on Friday night.

“I’m just really proud of them,” said Raul Brown about coming away to now lead the Boston City League. “Any time they buy in from the beginning of the season, I kind of know what kind of players we have and the athletes we have. If they buy in and they all put in the same amount of work, then the results will pay off.”

While holding a 24-19 advantage with 7:43 left, TechBoston (5-1, 2-1) leaned on senior Xavier Landrum as he rushed eight times for 108 yards on a drive (there were a couple of penalties) capped by a two-yard rushing score for senior Josiah Gillard.

“I think Landrum is the best player in the city,” Brown said about the senior back. “His size, his speed, his strength – there’s no running back in the city that matches him right now.”

Gillard also ran it in from 10 yards out four plays after his 59-yard kickoff return to push the lead back out to 24-12 with 1:02 left in the third.

Landrum finished with 154 yards on 20 carries and with his team backed up due to holding penalties had runs of 16, 12, 21, 18 and 26 to help make it a 32-19 advantage with under a minute left.

“We work hard every day for this and we are coming for states,” said Landrum about getting the hard-fought victory.

Latin Academy (2-3, 1-1) did not go away quietly as senior Jack Shapiro needed just 35 seconds to march down the field as he scored from a yard for his third rushing score of the contest to make it a 32-26 hole with five ticks left.

The Bears would recover the on-side kick attempt and one kneel down later made the win official.

Shapiro also scored on a fourth down play on the first drive of the third quarter to cut the deficit to 16-12. The other score for Latin Academy came on a six-yard scamper for Caleb Idahor.

In the first half, it only took one play for TechBoston to get on the board as Gillard found a wide-open Esau Boyd-Wallace for a first down and more as he broke a tackle for a 60-yard score. A Khamari Jacques rush made it 8-0 for the Bears just 21 ticks into the contest.

“I knew, if they executed that play, then it was going to be a great day of football,” Brown said about the triple-option pass.

Latin Academy answered with a 10-play drive that was capped by a two-yard rushing score for Shapiro. The two-point rush was no good as the Dragons trailed 8-6 about midway through the first.

TechBoston tacked on another score in the second quarter after an interception for junior Xavier Carter as Jacques took it 17 yards into the end zone. A two-point rush for Landrum pushed the lead out to 16-6 and that score held until the half. Sophomore Alex Calixte also had a pick for the Bears in the first half.
