Red Sox expected to start young trade deadline acquisition in finale
When the Red Sox acquired Quinn Priester at the trade deadline, they did so believing the young starting pitcher could eventually emerge as an impact arm in Boston.
Now, the 23-year-old right-hander will get a little taste of life at Fenway Park before the season is done.
Priester joined the Red Sox this weekend on the taxi squad, and manager Alex Cora said “there’s a good chance” he’ll start Sunday’s season finale.
Priester hasn’t been told whether that will happen for sure, but speaking to reporters Saturday he said he’s excited for the opportunity to visit Fenway Park and get to know all the coaches and players. Pitching the final game would be the cherry on top.
“It’d be awesome,” Priester said. “Getting the opportunity to meet everyone and dip my toe in, whatever happens it’s an awesome opportunity. And being able to meet the guys, AC, (pitching coach Andrew Bailey), it’s been great for me and it would be great going into the offseason.”
Acquired at the trade deadline from Pittsburgh in exchange for infielder Nick Yorke, Priester is a former first-round pick and top 100 prospect who immediately became one of the most promising young pitchers in the organization upon his arrival. Priester appeared in 10 MLB games for the Pirates this season and posted a 5.04 ERA in 44.2 innings, and in 40 career games at Triple-A he’s posted a 4.14 ERA in 189.1 innings.
His last four starts in Worcester were particularly strong, and he’s also demonstrated improved velocity since he joined the Red Sox.
“Stuff is really good. The last few strike-throwing was part of it,” Cora said. “If it happens just get your feet wet, pitch here at Fenway, and that means a lot, not only for the organization but for him and moving forward. That’s something we’ve been talking about the last year, the pitching structure and making it better, getting better arms here, and I think we’ve accomplished that.”
Beyond Sunday, Priester is expected to contend for a spot in Boston’s starting rotation in spring training, competing with WooSox teammate and fellow call-up Richard Fitts, who has impressed in his extended audition this September.
