China imports August 2024: Porsche now #4 YTD, sales off -16.1%

Porsche Cayenne sales are up 104% year-on-year in August.

Sales of new imported cars in China drop -16.1% year-on-year in August to just 50,903, leading to a year-to-date tally off -9% to 423,219. Lexus (-10.2%) and Mercedes (-7.8%) contain their fall below the market to top the brands charts as usual. BMW (-28.5%) is in great difficulty but manages to hold itself at its traditional third place. Porsche (-3.6%) resists well and overtakes Land Rover (-11.6%) to snap the 4th spot year-to-date. There are no gainers in the Top 10 with Mini (-3%) and Toyota (-10.2%) holding up best. In contrast Volkswagen (-44%), Audi (-34.2%) and Volvo (-27.3%) all freefall. Further down, Subaru (+3.6%) Jaguar (+81.5%) Genesis (+23%), Suzuki (+53.4%) and Ferrari (+75.6%) shine with year-on-year lifts.

Model-wise, the podium is unchanged on last month and year-to-date, with the Lexus ES (-12.7%), Mercedes GLE (+21%) and Lexus RX (-5.8%) leading the way. The Lexus NX (-8.8%) is up four spots on July to #4 and the Porsche Panamera (-10.7%) is up two to #5. The Land Rover Defender (+6%) and Porsche Cayenne (+104%) post market-defying uptick but both drop one rank on last month to #6 and #7 respectively.
