“Marmalade”

The details: Actor Keir O’Donnell (“Wedding Crashers,” “Paul Blart: Mall Cop”) makes his directorial debut in this rom-com/heist film. A critic for the Guardian wrote that “the stars are toothsome and have a fizzy chemistry, while the ending is surprisingly poignant for all its corniness.”

“Downtown Owl”

The details: Based on the 2008 novel of the same name by essayist and North Dakota native Chuck Klosterman, the film is set in 1983 and follows a woman who moves to rural North Dakota to teach a semester at the high school, seemingly to give her husband the time and space he needs to finish his graduate thesis.

The stars: Lily Rabe (who co-directed with Hamish Linklater), Ed Harris and Vanessa Hudgens.

“Merry Kiss Cam”

The details: Widowed artist Jess and sports-loving bartender Danny go on a first date at a hockey game and find themselves on the kiss cam, leading to their first smooch. John Serba of Decider wrote that it “maintains enough sweetness to satisfy any base cravings you may have after you’ve exhausted a bunch of this year’s Hallmark and Lifetime offerings to the cruel and insatiable gods of the holiday rom-com.”

“Rescuing Christmas”

The details: A young woman is granted three Christmas wishes and her final wish is that the holiday would disappear. After it does, a potential suitor steps in to help her bring it back.

“The Claw”

The details: Writer Karl Raschke spent more than a decade working on this documentary about his father, wrestling legend Baron von Raschke (aka James) and it debuted back in 2021 at the Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival. But it only made its way to streaming recently.
