Bishop Fenwick romps, hands coach David Woods his 200th win

PEABODY — The standard of excellence that is Bishop Fenwick football began with Al Costabile and, since 1998, has continued with David Woods. And on a rainy and cold Saturday at Donaldson Stadium, he joined his mentor in a very elite club.

The Crusaders forced six Bishop Stang turnovers, and received two touchdown passes from senior quarterback Brayden Clifford en route to a 39-7 win, the 200th in Woods’ career.

“I’ve been blessed my whole career,” Woods said after getting the obligatory Gatorade dousing. “I mean it’s crazy the support and the type of players that we get here and the assistant coaches and the adminstration. It’s unbelievable.”

Many of them came back to Peabody on Saturday to help celebrate the milestone that was more about family than the result on the field.

“We’ve had a lot of coaches who’ve had their kids go through the program here,” Woods said. “Dave Fossa’s son went through and my son (Stephen) went through and now it’s (assistant head coach) Dave Dugan’s son so it’s fun to see that.”

Fittingly, it was the aforementioned Lincoln Dugan who set the tone for the afternoon. His 45-yard punt return for a touchdown gave Fenwick a 6-0 lead just over two minutes in.

The Fenwick defense also made itself known early as Tyler Connolly picked off a Brock Winslow pass that eventually turned into a one-yard Dylan Patterulli touchdown run to make it 13-0 at the end of one quarter.

That lead expanded to 20-0 on the first play of the second quarter when Clifford hit Connolly down the right hash for a 20-yard touchdown.

It wasn’t all rosy for Fenwick as the second quarter turned into a bit of a nightmare thanks to a pair of interceptions and a Clifford fumble late in the half that gave the Spartans a short field. Luke Oliveira paid it off with a three-yard sweep to cut the lead to 20-7 at the break.

“There was a lot of mistakes by both teams,” Woods said.

The second half was a flashback to Fenwick football of old as it powered right through the Spartans defense.

Patterulli and Connolly did all the work on a 70-yard drive that ate 6:38 off the third quarter clock. Connolly capped it with an eight-yard run to make it 26-7.

“That opening drive of the second half was huge. The offensive line played a lot better and Dylan and Tyler both ran the ball hard,” Woods said.

After stopping Spang on downs on the next series, Clifford and company delivered the knockout punch as a 44-yard dart to Odin Garron early in the fourth quarter made it a four-score game.

“This is a great group of guys to coach,” Woods said. “A lot of these guys are best friends and they have a lot of fun playing football together.”
