Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey puts positive spin on Harris debate misstep

All is fair in love, war and — according to Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey — presidential debates.

One of Vice President Kamala Harris’ debate missteps was the subject of an ABC appearance Healey made over the weekend, after the Democratic nominee incorrectly said that there are no active duty troops currently serving in combat roles anywhere in the world

“There is not one member of the United States military, who is in active duty in a combat zone, in any war zone around the world, for the first time this century,” Harris said.

There are currently about 900 U.S. troops stationed in Syria and 2,500 in Iraq, all of whom are both technically and literally qualified as deployed in a combat zone.

Asked to explain how such a misstatement qualifies Harris for the Oval Office, Healey suggested that the vice president shouldn’t be held eternally responsible for a mistake made while speaking in public.

“Look, that was a comment — that was a comment in a debate, I think the point she was trying to make was a broader point,” Healey told ABC News’ Martha Raddatz.

Despite the misstep, Healey said that the difference between the candidates’ ability to lead was made clear at the debate.

“I think what’s important here, Martha, is that Kamala Harris, in contrast to Donald Trump, demonstrated herself to be Commander-in-Chief. We are in a world where there are all sorts of conflicts. It’s all the more reason we need someone who is serious and supports the military,” Healey said.

“Kamala Harris, remember, is the person who stands with NATO, who supports our allies, who is working to bring countries together. Donald Trump stands with Vladimir Putin. So I think that’s what’s really important. Kamala Harris, she respects our military, she respects our servicemembers. Donald Trump calls them suckers and losers,” Healey said.

According to the MassGOP, Healey’s attempt to brush over Harris’ easily disprovable assertion isn’t going to make it go away.

“Harris brought on one of the best politicians in the game at dodging accountability and hiding the truth. If Governor Healey were as adept at solving the Commonwealth’s problems as she is at spinning narratives, Massachusetts wouldn’t rank among the lowest states in affordability, transparency, and managing the out-of-control migrant crisis that is draining public resources,” a spokesperson told the Herald.
