Seahawks wideout admitted refs botched key penalty, Patriots defender says

FOXBORO — The penalty that helped set up the Seahawks’ game-winning field goal Sunday should not have been call.

Just ask Tyler Lockett.

Lockett’s downfield battle for the ball resulted in a defensive pass interference flag on Patriots cornerback Jonathan Jones. Jones said Lockett told him after the play that his coverage “wasn’t a penalty.”

“Straight up, that was what he told me,” Jones said postgame. “It sucks. I kind of feel like that was the play of the game, you know what I mean? But I’ll go back, watch it on film … see if there’s something I could have did better and take it from there.”

Jones’ dubious DPI gave Seattle a first down at New England’s 49-yard line. Lockett beat Jones for a 16-yard completion four plays later, and Jason Myers booted a 31-yard field goal to give the Seahawks a 23-20 overtime victory at Gillette Stadium.

Patriots safety Kyle Dugger also took issue with the flag on Jones.

“I’m not going to bash the refs,” Dugger said. “I know there was a lot of physicality going on from (the Seahawks), as well as ourselves. It definitely wasn’t a call in the right direction. I feel like they were both battling, and they kind of just chose the defensive guy.”

That wasn’t the only negative moment for New England’s secondary on Sunday, however.

A miscommunication between Dugger and cornerback Christian Gonzalez resulted in a 56-yard first-quarter touchdown by DK Metcalf. Later, backup corner Marco Wilson was whistled for pass interference in the end zone on third down, extending a Seattle drive that produced another seven points.

Seahawks wide receivers Metcalf and Jaxon Smith-Njigba combined for 22 catches for 241 yards and a touchdown in the win. Quarterback Geno Smith went 33-for-44 for 327 yards with no turnovers.

“We can’t leave it up to officials,” safety and co-captain Jabrill Peppers said. “We’ve got to make plays. We had countless opportunities to get off the field, and we just didn’t execute.”

It wasn’t all bad for New England’s defense, which allowed just six points after halftime. But that unit will have plenty to clean up on a short week. The 1-1 Patriots visit the 1-1 New York Jets on “Thursday Night Football.”
