Massachusetts man held after injuring three police officers, ‘endangering life’ of one
A Massachusetts man with a lengthy criminal history is behind bars without bail after he allegedly tried to speed away from police twice within the past handful of days, with the latter encounter “endangering the life” of one officer.
Kevin Burke, 40, of North Attleboro, pleaded not guilty to charges stemming from his attempts to escape arrest and a drug trafficking charge after medical personnel allegedly found fentanyl on him while being treated for a “superficial gunshot wound” he suffered in a police altercation Thursday.
Burke’s arraignment at Attleboro District Court on Friday came nearly 24 hours after North Attleboro police officers tracked him to a Red Roof Inn in Mansfield, near Route 140 and Interstates 95 and 495.
Officers responded to the hotel around 3 p.m. Thursday to serve “outstanding arrest warrants” on Burke, “an individual who posed a danger to the community,” Chief Richard McQuade wrote in a release Thursday night.
Burke avoided officers waiting outside his room, skirting around them before getting into a black BMW, police said. That’s when the episode escalated, with officers breaking the driver’s side window as they tried to shut the car off.
“Instead of surrendering when confronted by the officers, the suspect fled in his motor vehicle,” McQuade wrote. “An officer was dragged by the fleeing motor vehicle, endangering the life of the officer.”
“A second North Attleboro officer discharged his weapon at the suspect as he fled,” the chief added.
Police found the BMW, with a shattered window, that Burke had been in outside of a North Attleboro martial arts academy. Officers found the suspect nearby, taking him into custody after a brief foot chase.
“Three North Attleboro officers were also injured during this incident,” McQuade wrote. “All have been released from the hospital and are thankfully expected to make a full recovery.”
Mansfield Police also responded to the Red Roof Inn, but their arrival came after Burke had already fled the scene.
A similar scene occurred last Sunday when North Attleboro police responded to Mount Hope Cemetary in the Bristol County town to serve Burke on the arrest warrants. But when Burke spotted police, he allegedly jumped into his car and tried to drive away, police said.
Burke resisted arrest when two officers reached inside the BMW in an attempt to pull Burke out of the driver’s seat. Police allege a person in the passenger seat put the car into drive, and the two drove out of the cemetery, nearly missing bystanders.
Burke has racketed up more than a handful of charges this year. Court records dating back to March indicate he has failed to stop for a police officer and is a fugitive from justice.
Other charges in that span include assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, assault and battery on a police officer (3 counts), and trafficking more than 10 grams of fentanyl, among others.
Burke is also wanted by Rhode Island authorities in connection to a 2022 arrest for allegedly speeding from police, breaking into a building with felonious intent, and failure to stop after a crash.
He is set to appear for a dangerousness hearing at Attleboro District Court next Friday.
