High school football: Mounds View takes advantage of opportunities to beat Forest Lake 31-7

Senior quarterback Jacob Sampson and his Mounds View teammates didn’t take advantage of every break that came their way Friday night.

But the Mustangs made the most of enough of them to build a commanding lead they did not relinquish en route to beating Forest Lake 31-7 at Mustang Stadium.

Senior Mitchell Olson scored on a 20-yard, fourth-down touchdown run on the game’s opening drive to put Mounds View up 7-0 early.

After that, the Mustangs (2-1) got the ball back:

At the Rangers’ 23-yard line following a botched punting situation
at its own 47 after a punt
at the Forest Lake 45 following a fumble recovery by senior Colton Loween
at its own 9 after an interception by senior Jonny Gale
and at the Rangers’ 6 after blocking a punt just before halftime.

Only two of those drives yielded scores — a 14-yard touchdown run by Sampson on fourth down early in the second quarter and a six-yard touchdown pass from Sampson to senior Jack Dahl following the blocked punt.

But that was enough to send Mounds View into the locker room leading 21-0.

The Forest Lake miscues continued on the opening drive of the second half when Mustangs senior Joey Muhlstein returned a fumble 50 yards for a touchdown to extend the margin to 28-0.

Then, following another interception by Gale, senior Cooper Fellman hit a 36-yard field goal to put Mounds View on top 31-0.

The Rangers (1-2) finally got on the board on a 13-yard touchdown catch by sophomore Mack Jurkovich with 8:00 to play. But that was as close as they’d get on a night when things broke almost all the Mustangs’ way.
