Austria August 2024: VW Polo #1, BYD Seal up to #11

The BYD Seal misses out on a Top 10 finish by just 6 sales.

17,115 new cars hit Austrian roads in August, a -8.9% year-on-year decline. The year-to-date tally is however in positive at +5% to 171,129. Volkswagen (-11.6%) is in difficulty but stays in pole position with 14.8% share. It distances a robust Skoda (+9.9%), BMW (-6.3%) and Audi (-8.3%) both falling slower than the market. Toyota (+18.4%) excels at #5 and climbs to #7 year-to-date as a result. Mercedes (-14.1%) disappoints while Dacia (+4.2%) stays at #7. Peugeot (+150.4%) lodges the largest year-on-year gain in the Top 18 with BYD (+252.6%) doing better at #19, the brand’s first incursion inside the Austrian Top 20.

Model-wise, the VW Polo (+193.6%) triples its sales year-on-year and gains two spots on July to lead the way for the first time since January 2022. Leader last month, the BMW X1 (+26.8%) drops to a still excellent 2nd place in August, now ranking #7 year-to-date. The Dacia Sandero (+67.1%) advances to #3 overall, outselling the Skoda Fabia (+46.2%) and Octavia (-34.3%). The Tesla Model Y (-29.3%) reappears inside the Top 20 at #6 and ranks #3 so far this year vs. #2 over the Full Year 2023. Still #1 year-to-date, the VW Golf (-40.4%) is hit hard year-on-year to end the month at #7. The Skoda Scala (+143.8%) and Toyota Corolla (+211%) both lodge their first ever Top 10 finish at #8 and #9 respectively. It’s another very impressive month for the new BYD Seal up 8 spots on last month to #11, just 6 units off the 10th place. Notice also the Tesla Model 3 down -90.6%.
