MIAA Board of Directors: Statewide tournament switch has been a big success
The Tournament Management Committee has taken a great deal of pride in changing the postseason format from regional to statewide.
At Wednesday’s MIAA Board of Directors meeting, TMC chairman Shaun Hart and MIAA associate director Sherry Bryant spoke at length about the statewide tournament and the success it’s accomplished over the past three years.
“Getting to the third year was a big milestone, it was a landmark,” said Hart, who is the athletic director at Burlington. “We’ve been able to use data driven information and the accuracy for success in getting the top 32 teams into the tournament is about 75-80 percent, which is good thanks to (MIAA assistant director) Jim Clark’s yeoman work.”
One of the hot button topics which does rile coaches and athletic directors throughout the commonwealth is the Margin of Victory (MOV) component. Many would prefer to see a wins components added into the power rating formula.
“We have tried to do run it with different data and it always comes back to what we are doing now is the best thing,” Hart said. “The data clearly supports what we are doing.”
Vice President Tom Arria delivered the financial report for the spring tournament. He said that the spring tournament revenue was down $27,000, though he was quick to point out that many spring postseason events are contested at fields with no admission.
MIAA executive director Bob Baldwin spoke with pride about the NFHS Summer Meeting in Boston from June 28-July 1 which his organization played a role in hosting. He spoke of a local guest which included the likes of national broadcaster Sean McDonough, former New England Patriot Jermaine Wiggins and reigning NBA Coach of the Year Mark Daigneault.
In a final act of duty before going into executive session, the board unanimously approved MATCH Charter Public High School’s application for MIAA membership.
