10,000 Lakes Concours d’Elegance returns after 5 years — and a Stillwater couple has just the car for it
After a five-year hiatus, the crème of the crop of classic car shows in Minnesota — the 10,000 Lakes Concours d’Elegance — returns this weekend.
This year’s show, which will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday on the infield of Canterbury Park in Shakopee, will feature more than 130 “historically significant and extraordinary automobiles,” including several owned by east-metro residents, organizers say.
Mark and Gloria Desch, of Stillwater, are bringing their 1932 Stutz SV-16 Convertible, which Desch found in a barn in Pine River, Minn., in 2001. “A friend told me about it,” Mark Desch said. “My friend lived up there and knew it was there.”
It is believed that the Stutz was bought new by a banker in Virginia, Minn., he said.

The Desches started collecting classic cars after they bought a 1931 Auburn at an auction in Wilkes-Barre, Penn., “by chance, many years ago,” he said. “Gloria is the one who told me, ‘OK, bid on it because it’s going cheap.’ I said, ‘It’s not. It’s not done yet.’ So I put my hand up, and we came home with the car.”
The couple now own 15 classic cars that span the years 1905 to 1962, including a 1931 Peerless, which is in the process of being restored by Odyssey Restorations in Spring Lake Park. This year’s Concours d’Elegance — French for “competition of elegance” — also will feature 12 tractors and six motorcycles. In addition to the car show and competition, the event also will include live entertainment, including a performance by Chanhassen Dinner Theater musicians; tastings of wines, beers, gins and whiskeys; a shopping area for art by local creators, antiques and handmade items; an outdoor cigar deck, and a play area that will include craft projects and pony rides.
Tickets are $25 per person; children 16 and under are free with each paid adult.
Proceeds from the event will benefit Gillette Children’s in St. Paul.
