Red Sox notebook: Liam Hendriks nominated for Roberto Clemente Award
Liam Hendriks has been announced as the Red Sox nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award, which is given annually to the major leaguer who best represents the game through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field.
“It’s such an honor. Obviously, you don’t do off-the-field work because of awards or anything like that, but it’s always nice to be recognized, especially with the groups that we work with being promoted alongside,” Hendriks said. “It’s just a tribute to what both my wife and I have been able to accomplish with coming here, and being able to do these opportunities without playing, it’s definitely an honor to be nominated.”
The right-hander has not appeared in a big league game this season as he recovers from Tommy John surgery, but has remained dedicated to meeting with young cancer patients, both at home and on the road. Hendriks’ progress towards a return to action slowed this week when he suffered a setback in his rehab, but Hendriks described it as more of a “speed hump” and is still confident he’ll be able to pitch in the majors before the end of the season.
Hill released
The Red Sox announced Monday night that left-hander Rich Hill has been released. The 44-year-old signed a minor league deal with the club on Aug. 17 and eventually made his return to the majors for his 20th MLB season. Hill appeared in four games with the Red Sox, allowing two runs over 3.2 innings, before being designated for assignment this past Friday.
