Monday’s high school scores and highlights

FIELD HOCKEY

The Dighton-Rehoboth field hockey team officially forfeited an upcoming game scheduled for September 17 against Somerset Berkley due to safety and fairness concerns over competing against boys, according to a statement released Monday night by Dighton-Rehoboth Regional School District superintendent of schools Bill Runey.

In the statement, Runey wrote the decision is, “In accordance with school committee policy,” which, “…allows players and/or coaches to opt out of competitions or any part thereof against an opposing team because that team includes a member of the opposite sex.”

The decision was made by coaches and captains of the team, which saw one of their players suffer facial injuries on a ball hit by a boy while defending a corner penalty. Runey wrote the district, “supports this decision as there are times we have to place a higher value on safety than on victory.” He then follows with an encouragement for other schools to, “consider following suit to achieve safety and promote fair competition for female athletes.”

Forfeiting will impact Dighton-Rehoboth’s rating in the power rankings. Athletic director Matt McKinnon says the school plans to forfeit a second matchup with Somerset Berkley on October 8 as first reported by Tyler Hetu of The Sun Chronicle.
