Patriots elevate two players from practice squad, including potential starter

The Patriots added more help in the trenches for Sunday’s season opener against the Bengals.

Head coach Jerod Mayo elevated guard Michael Jordan and defensive tackle Trysten Hill from the practice squad on Saturday afternoon.

Jordan appeared to be a potential option to start at left guard in Week 1 with Sidy Sow (ankle) ruled out, based on reps early in practice this week. Nick Leverett, who spent most of the summer as a starting center, is another option.

The rest of the Patriots’ top offensive line is expected to be Chukwuma Okorafor at left tackle, David Andrews at center, rookie Layden Robinson at right guard and Mike Onwenu at right tackle.

Tackle Vederian Lowe’s potential availability could shake up that unit or cause the Patriots to rotate their offensive line.

Jordan was selected by the Bengals in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL Draft out of Ohio State. The 6-foot-6, 315-pound veteran has experience at guard, center and tackle.

Jordan, 26, joined the Patriots in January.

Jordan and Hill, 26, made the Patriots’ initial 53-man roster but were cut the next day after four players were added on waivers. Jordan and Hill then immediately signed to the Patriots’ practice squad.

Hill adds depth behind Davon Godchaux, Daniel Ekuale, Jeremiah Pharms Jr. and Eric Johnson the Patriots’ defensive line. The 2019 second-round pick spent most of last season on the Patriots’ practice squad.

He’s expected to contribute as a third-down interior pass rusher.
