India August 2024: Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza and Ertiga break records, Tata Curvv and Citroen Basalt land

The Tata Curvv makes its first appearance in the Indian charts in August.

New car wholesales in India dip -1.7% year-on-year in August to 354,267 units, keeping in mind August 2023 was an all-time high monthly record at the time, so we remain at very high levels. Indeed the year-to-date volume is now up 5% to a record 2,857,868 sales after 8 months. Heavy rains in parts of the country (Kerala, Gujarat…) impacted business and increasing inventory levels have pushed OEM to limit dispatches to dealerships. The Top 3 carmakers all fall faster than the market. Maruti Suzuki is down -8.4% to 40.4% share, followed by Hyundai (-8%) and Tata (-3%). In contrast Mahindra (+16.1%), Toyota (+36.3%) and Kia (+17.2%) shoot up and MG (+9.2%) also impresses. Citroen (+121.4%) is the most dynamic albeit from a very low base, and thanks to one new launch as we’ll see further down.

The Citroen Basalt is the second significant launch of the month.

The Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza and Ertiga rank #1 and #2 and both break their volume record.

There’s a lot of movement in the models charts: the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza (+31.7%) scores its first ever monthly win and breaks its volume record at 19,190 sales. Its previous best were 17,113 last April and #3 reached five times: in August 2021, August 2022, March 2023, July 2023 and April 2024. In 2nd place, the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga (+50.9%) also reaches its highest ever volume at 18,580 (previous best 15,902 last June) and ranks #2 for the 5th time after May 2020, September 2021, April 2022 and December 2022. #1 last month, the Hyundai Creta (+21.2%) falls to #3 with another solid result. The Tata Punch (+7.7%) is #5 this month but remains the uncontested YTD leader. We welcome two significant new models in the August charts, both coupe SUVs: the Tata Curvv lands at #31 and the Citroen Basalt at #62. The Nissan X-Trail also makes its first appearance as a locally assembled model at #80.
