That’s rich: Fall fashion a feast of colors & patterns
Labor Day has come and gone, which means it’s time to think of all things fall. You know: jewel tones, romantic, intricate patterns, plaids and plum-colored paisleys and warm taupes, deep forest greens and contrasting neutrals. And above all, the softest textures — like silks and wools, denims and leathers and suedes (whether real or faux), and cashmeres.
And if nothing else, fall is for layering. So that means…
Classic pairings like Fair Isle sweaters underneath velvet blazers. As in: the Fair Isle Wool-Blend Turtleneck Sweater ($265 on ralphlauren.com). The soft wool blend knit with a relaxed turtleneck silhouette lets you layer with ease. (And you can still see the “LRL” bullion patch at the chest whenever you raise your arm or give anyone a high-five.) I also love that the sweater’s made in accordance with farms certified by the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS). To go on top, there’s the Visko Velvet Blazer ($418.80 on zadig-et-voltaire.com), an ultra-tailored, impeccable cut in deep chocolatey brown with shoulder pads and double-breasted buttoning.
I’m also thinking tweedy pants beneath button-down shirts and fitted cashmere vests. For the former, it doesn’t get much more fetching than the House of Bruar’s Ladies Tweed Trousers ($135 on houseofbruar.com). They come in a dozen fantastic tweeds, but by far the best is River Berry Gunclub — an earthy check that will no doubt inspire you to take many wistful walks with your springer spaniel. Pair them with the Long-Sleeved Women’s Essential Cotton Poplin Shirt ($59.95 on llbean.com) — its warm brown tones will complement the plaid perfectly and its stretch poplin will feel fantastic in the cool fall air. Especially when you top it with the Cashmere Cable-Knit Sweater-vest ($118 on jcrew.com) in navy or heather charcoal, with its pretty button details and classic cable-knit texture. Bonus: It’s made in partnership with the Aid by Trade Foundation (AbTF), a nonprofit that promotes sustainable agricultural development across the globe.
I’m also thinking pretty plum-hued silk skirts, like the 100% Washable Silk Skirt ($59.90 on quince.com). It actually comes in a slew of dizzying fall colors, but I particularly love the one they call “wine tasting.” It’s a bias-cut number in an incredibly comfy design with a hidden elastic waist, that pairs wonderfully with almost every kind of top, from turtlenecks to camis to jackets. I’m loving it with a big-on-luxury sweater like Jenni Kayne’s Cashmere Turtleneck ($695 on jennikayne.com), a thing of beauty in soft colors like Undyed Stone and Storm.
I also love a denim jacket — something slim and fitted, like the Janelle Slim Fit Raw Hem Denim Jacket ($395 on nordstrom.com) by L’Agence — with its streamlined design and sharp elbows, as an ideal match for the refined and feminine nature of the Mila Crêpe Pull-On Skirt ($110.99 on garnethill.com). It’s a warm-hued vision in Spiced Rose Ikat — and its flowy-meets-fancy attitude belies the casual feel of the romantic skirt’s pockets in its floral midi expanse, and its relaxed elastic waist. What a fantastic contrast!
Fall is also about deep, dark patterns — like the one on the Belting-Print Crepe Shirtdress ($165 on ralphlauren.com), a midi-length, perfect-for-work-and-play look that gets gussied up when layered with the Merav Coat ($499 on paige.com), a multicolor chocolate brown houndstooth jacket. Toss in a pair of burnished brown leather boots like the Goldy Espresso Tall Boot ($695 on loefflerrandall.com), and you are simply a vision of fall.
