DIV. 7-8 OVERVIEW
Never underestimate the South Shore League’s ability to put up a quality team or two capable of winning a state championship.
Case in point this year is Div. 7 where Mashpee appears ready to make a serious run at getting to Foxboro. The Falcons suffered through an injury-plagued 2023 season but the good news is that plenty of players got some much needed experience. Look for this team from the Cape to be among the best in the SSL.
Never look past a Cohasset team which has had its share of success over the years. Michael Wildfire should be among the more productive quarterbacks in Div. 7 once again.
Rockland is always going to be physical and the proverbial tough out, while West Bridgewater should have another quality team led by running back Ty Holmes.
Amesbury got to the Div, 7 state finals last year, but lost some key components. Others to watch include Monomoy, Lowell Catholic and Manchester-Essex.
Div. 8 appears to be wide open on the Eastern Mass. front with Bourne figuring to be one of the contenders as it returns several starters on both sides of the ball. Randolph should have one of the top backs in the division in Nate Gomes, while Nashoba Tech is capable of making a run.
As for the Boston City League schools, keep an eye on Brighton. The Bengals should have one of the better lines and head coach Randolph Abraham always finds some skill position players.
DANDY DOZEN FOR DIV. 7-8
Ta’Qaire Bell, Jr., WR, 5-7, 150 (Cathedral): Speedy slot receiver helped guide the Panthers to a berth in the Division 8 Final Four last year.
Caiden Doherty, Jr., OL/DL, 5-11, 225 (Bourne): A starter since his freshman year, Doherty should be one of the top linemen in Division 8 this fall.
Luke Dunham, Sr., QB/DB (Hull): One of the few starters from Hull’s Div. 8 state championship squad in 2022, Dunham will be expected to do a variety of things for the Pirates this fall.
Nate Gomes, Sr., RB, 6-0, 210, (Randoph): Gomes had a big junior year, rushing for 1,272 and 14 touchdowns on 136 carries.
Ty Holmes, Jr,, RB, 5-9, 165 (West Bridgewater): As a sophomore, Holmes turned in a big season as he rushed for 1,365 yards and 14 touchdowns on 160 carries.
Dominic Matteodo, Jr., QB, 5-11, 175 (Mashpee): Look for this junior to blossom as one of the top quarterbacks in the South Shore League this fall.
Miguel Montalvo, Jr., DE, 6-0, 215 (Nashoba Tech): Montalvo was one of the top sophomores in the Commonwealth Athletic Conference, finishing with 40 tackles and four sacks.
Jack Shapiro, Jr., QB, 6-2. 190 (Latin Academy): Two-sport star should be one of the premier quarterbacks in Division 7 this fall.
Ben Squarcia, Sr,, RB, 6-0, 195 (Mashpee): Squarcia missed his junior year due to an injury, but earned all-South Shore League All-Star honors after averaging more than seven yards a carry in his sophomore season.
Chris Testa, Sr. RB/DB, 5-7, 160 (East Boston): Testa had a productive junior year for the Jets, rushing for more than 800 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Michael Wildfire, Jr., QB, 6-1, 185 (Cohasset): Wildfire had a terrific sophomore year as he threw for 2,193 yards and 22 touchdowns.
Logan Wills, Sr., RB/DB, 5-10, 175 (Mashpee): Stepped up big time last year as he rushed for more than 1,000 yards,
