Massachusetts migrant crisis: Haitian national charged with sexually assaulting minor

An 18-year-old Haitian national, living in Massachusetts unlawfully, has been taken into custody after being charged with sexually assaulting a minor in Mansfield, according to authorities.

The Mansfeld Police Department arrested Akim Marc Desire on Aug. 28 on a charge of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security stated in a release on Wednesday.

The release did not state the age of the victim and where the alleged crime occurred in the suburban town roughly 35 miles south of Boston.

After Mansfield police made the arrest, Enforcement and Removal Operations Boston placed a detainer on Desire who reportedly entered the United States lawfully on June 4 but had since violated the terms of his entry.

“Akim Marc Desire allegedly victimized a minor member of our Massachusetts community,” ERO Boston Field Office Director Todd M. Lyons said in a statement. “We cannot tolerate such a potentially dire threat to the welfare of children in our community. ERO Boston will continue to prioritize public safety by arresting and removing egregious noncitizen offenders from our New England neighborhoods.”

Desire has been served a notice to appear before a Department of Justice immigration judge after being arraigned in Attleboro District Court last Friday. ERO officers took him into custody following the arraignment.
