High school roundup: Legendary St. John’s (Shrewsbury) coach Bob Foley steps down
One of the greatest careers in New England high school basketball history came to an end on Tuesday when iconic St. John’s (Shrewsbury) boys coach Bob Foley stepped down after a 61-year voyage.
The state’s all-time winningest coach with 980 wins, Foley amassed 774 of them during his 44-year run at St. John’s Shrewsbury. Under his leadership, the Pioneers won a pair of Division 1 state titles (2000 and 2009) and took seven more teams to the state championship game. He was inducted into the school’s athletic Hall of Fame in 2011.
“Walking away from this position has been the toughest decision I’ve had to make in my 61 years of coaching,” said Foley, who previously coached at St. Peter-Marian and Uxbridge. “I love the players, I love St. John’s, I love basketball and I wish nothing but the best for the future of this program.”
According to athletic director Michael Mead, the school will immediately begin the search for Foley’s replacement.
