Head coach Jerod Mayo isn’t setting expectations too high for the Patriots heading into the 2024 season.

The Patriots currently have the lowest over-under win total, set at 4.5, on sportsbooks, meaning Vegas is predicting them to be the NFL’s worst team.

So, what would Mayo consider a successful season for his team? The head coach was asked that question on WEEI’s “The Greg Hill Show” on Tuesday morning.

“A successful season is going out there, being competitive each and every game and getting better as the year progresses,” Mayo said. “That’s how I look at it.”

The Patriots won just four games last season and brought back most of their core players. They did replace quarterbacks Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe with Jacoby Brissett and Drake Maye, traded outside linebacker Matthew Judon to the Falcons and placed defensive tackle Christian Barmore on the non-football injury list after he was diagnosed with blood clots.

Mayo is hoping that his players take the low expectations set from the media and sportsbooks and use it as motivation.

“They hear that stuff, and it should make them upset, because whether it’s your parents calling you or your friends calling you, it should make them upset, and hopefully that fuels good practices that lead to having good games,” Mayo said.
