Red Sox’ Roman Anthony named MLB’s No. 2 prospect by Baseball America

Baseball America released its latest Top 100 Prospect Rankings on Tuesday afternoon, and the updated list was extremely kind to the Red Sox.

Six Red Sox prospects now rank within the Top 100, with Roman Anthony jumping all the way to No. 2.

“Anthony was one of the breakout stars of the 2023 season, and he’s continued to impress throughout 2024,” Baseball America wrote. “He’s poised to reach the majors before his 21st birthday, and he has a combination of power and plate discipline that should serve him well for years to come.”

The 20-year-old outfielder has surged through the ranks ever since he was selected No. 79 overall in the 2022 MLB Draft, and recently he became the youngest Red Sox prospect to reach Triple-A in over 40 years. Anthony has quickly made himself at home in Worcester, and entering Tuesday he was batting .315 with three home runs, 10 RBI and a .927 OPS through his first 18 games with the WooSox.

Anthony now slots behind only Tampa Bay’s Junior Caminero in Baseball America’s rankings, but he’s not alone. Marcelo Mayer also ranks No. 11, Kristian Campbell made a huge jump to No. 25 and Kyle Teel is right with him at No. 26, giving the Red Sox four prospects inside the top 30.

Recent first-round draft pick Braden Montgomery is also on the list at No. 61, and breakout 18-year-old shortstop Franklin Arias cracked the list at No. 94.

Overall the Red Sox are one of just five clubs with six or more Top 100 prospects, and news of the rankings generated plenty of excitement across the organization. Portland Sea Dogs manager Chad Epperson, who recently managed each of the club’s top four prospects before their promotions to Triple-A, said he was thrilled to see his former players earn such recognition.

“You talk about guys who genuinely love to play baseball, I mean, all four of those guys genuinely love to play,” Epperson said. “I’m so glad the industry recognizes not only their skillset but their makeup and the way they go about things, it’s pretty special.”
