Quarterback Jacoby Brissett, center David Andrews, defensive lineman Deatrich Wise Jr., linebacker Ja’Whaun Bentley, safety Jabrill Peppers and long snapper Joe Cardona were all elected by a players vote.
Head coach Jerod Mayo shared the news Monday in an afternoon press conference.
“They embody everything that we preach about each and every day; not only on the football field, but also off the football field,” Mayo said. “And I’m very excited to have these guys, and I know they’re excited, as well, to lead this football team.”
Brissett, Peppers and Cardona are all first-time Patriots captains. Brissett was named the team’s starting quarterback last week, while Peppers recently signed an extension that will keep him in New England long-term. Cardona is the Patriots’ longest-tenured player, but a brand new captain since Matthew Slater served as the special teams leader every year since Cardona entered the league in 2015.
Andrews is the most experienced captain, now starting his eighth season as a recognized team leader. Bentley and Wise have been honored for a fourth and third time, respectively.
“It’s a huge honor,” Andrews said.
In a departure from previous seasons, these players will wear a capital “C” on their jerseys during games. Peppers sounded enthused about the change.
“When you wear that patch, there’s definitely a huge responsibility that comes with it,” he said.
