FBI extradites man who allegedly left girlfriend’s body at airport, fled to Kenya

The alleged killer of a Brockton nurse who fled to Kenya in 2023 was extradited back to Massachusetts over the weekend, the Boston Division of the FBI and the State Police announced Monday.

Kevin Kangethe, 40, of Lowell, was escorted from Nairobi to Logan International Airport on a flight Saturday evening. He is expected to appear in Suffolk Superior Court on Tuesday.

Kangethe is accused of killing his girlfriend, 31-year-old Margaret Mbitu, whose body was found in a car in the central garage at the Boston airport on Nov. 1, 2023. Kangethe had purchased a one-way ticket to Nairobi, Kenya on Oct. 31 and was aboard the flight when her body was found.

An arrest warrant charging Kangethe with Mbitu’s murder was issued out of Chelsea District Court on Nov. 2, 2023, followed by a federal arrest warrant issued by the U.S. District Court in Massachusetts the next day, charging Kangethe with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.

The suspect was apprehended on Jan. 29 by Kenyan authorities but escaped weeks before he was set to be extradited to the U.S. He was reportedly meeting with his lawyer in Muthaiga Police Station in Nairobi when he slipped through the defenses.

He was recaptured on Feb. 14 and remained in custody in Nairobi until his extradition Saturday.
