Labor Day weather cool and clear with more of the same on the way for Massachusetts
The coming days will represent the quintessential early-fall week in Boston as far as the weather is concerned, according to the National Weather Service, with a cold front settling in that will keep the skies clear and the temperatures comfortable from Labor Day to Friday.
NWS Meteorologist Frank Nocera told the Herald a mass of cold air will accompany the remaining rush of returning college students and settle into Boston overnight from Sunday into Monday morning, driving away the humidity felt through the weekend.
“We’re going to have a pretty nice change in air mass, you know? It’s somewhat muggy out there now, and warm,” Nocera said on Sunday. “With that change in air mass tomorrow highs will be seasonable — in the upper 70s — but the humidity is going to be very comfortable, very dry. It will definitely feel like a September-like air mass.”
That blob of cool air will not stick around though the end of the fall semester, but will instead shuffle along before most add/drop periods end. Nocera said the air mass could be here “for the whole week.”
“Probably the core of the cool air is Tuesday. Monday night, Tuesday morning — many locations will be in the 40s,” he said. Boston proper will see lows around 55 degrees, he said.
High temperatures on Tuesday are expected to cap out in the lower 70s, according to the weather service.
Over the following three days, Nocera said, Greater Boston will gradually grow warmer and edge toward but probably not quite reach 80 degrees, with overnight lows forecast in the mid to lower 50s.
“But, again, very comfortable humidity. So, mild days, cool nights. Pretty typical for September,” he said. “Maybe a little bit cooler than normal, but not by much.”

The weather service predicts Monday will be mostly sunny, and the following nights and days clear or sunny. Friday, according to NWS, could see some clouds but will be a mostly sunny day.
The next major chance for precipitation doesn’t come around until Friday night, when NWS predicts mostly cloudy conditions, or Saturday, the meteorologist said, when there is just a slight chance of showers.
