Patriots sign two players to practice squad, release veteran offensive lineman

The Patriots filled two more practice squad spots Friday, signing cornerback Isaiah Bolden and outside linebacker Ochaun Mathis.

The Patriots now have 15 players on their practice squad. Since one of those players, defensive end Jotham Russell, is an international pathway program player and is exempt, they have two more spots available.

Veteran offensive tackle Calvin Anderson was also released from injured reserve on Friday. Anderson was placed on injured reserve but was not designated for return Tuesday when the Patriots trimmed their roster down to 53 players.

Anderson, 28, began his second stint with the Patriots last offseason when he signed a two-year deal in free agency. He contracted malaria before training camp while doing philanthropic work in Nigeria and recovered after missing most of the summer. He struggled in five games with two starts once the season began and was placed on injured reserve in November after suffering a heart contusion in practice.

The former Broncos offensive tackle was competing for a starting spot on the offensive line this summer but ultimately was beat out for a roster spot by Mike Onwenu, Chukwuma Okorafor, Vederian Lowe and Caedan Wallace.

Bolden, 24, initially made the Patriots’ 53-man roster spot but was released after the team claimed four players on waivers Wednesday. He missed his rookie season with a concussion in 2023.

Mathis, 25, was selected in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft by the Rams out of Nebraska. The 6-foot-5, 260-pound defender played eight games and registered two tackles as a rookie.
