Red Sox manager says right-hander’s injury not season-ending
Red Sox right-hander Luis Garcia was placed on the injured list with right elbow inflammation just prior to Tuesday’s game, but manager Alex Cora said the club doesn’t expect Garcia to miss the rest of the season.
“Not season-ending, so he’ll get treatment and we’ll see where we’re at in the upcoming days and go from there,” Cora said.
Garcia, who was acquired at the trade deadline along with fellow right-hander Lucas Sims, has struggled since coming to Boston from the Los Angeles Angels. The 37-year-old has allowed 13 earned runs in 11.1 innings, including at least one run in seven of his 11 appearances with the Red Sox.
Sims was also placed on the injured list Tuesday with a right lat strain, and Cora went into greater detail on what he’s dealing with prior to Wednesday’s first pitch as well.
“The back on the lower area, so he’s moving, he’s working out and all that stuff,” Cora said. “Obviously it bothers him when he reaches out, so hopefully we’ll re-eval in 10 days and see where we’re at.”
In other injury news, right-hander Liam Hendriks was scheduled to throw his latest rehab outing in Worcester on Wednesday night. The appearance would be his fourth of what is expected to be six to seven minor league appearances.
Left-hander Cam Booser is also expected to begin a rehab assignment on Thursday, Cora said, and shortstop Trevor Story has been regularly hitting off the Trajekt pitching machine and taking ground balls. He likely won’t begin a rehab assignment until next week at the earliest, though he is expected to travel to New York when the Red Sox play the Mets in Queens.
