Red Sox lineup: Rafael Devers to sit third straight game, expected to DH on Friday

Rafael Devers is out of the Red Sox lineup for the third straight game on Thursday, but manager Alex Cora indicated he should be back as a designated hitter by tomorrow.

“I think for today and the next few days it makes sense for (Nick Sogard) to play third base,” Cora said. “Raffy we’re shooting to DH tomorrow, DH Saturday and play the field on Sunday.”

Devers has been battling shoulder soreness throughout the season. Though he’s been able to consistently play through the injury and produce at a high level, there have been a handful of occasions where the Red Sox have given him a couple of extra days of rest.

The All-Star third baseman has repaid his manager by delivering one of the best seasons of his career. He’s currently batting .290 with 28 home runs, 80 RBI and a .940 OPS, and his 118 games played ranks third on the team.

Nick Sogard, who was just called up from Triple-A after infielder David Hamilton was placed on the 10-day injured list with a fractured left index finger, will start at third base and bat eighth. Rookie Mickey Gasper will start at second base and bat second, the highest of his career, and Triston Casas will take over clean-up hitting duties for Devers in the four-spot.

Kutter Crawford (8-11, 4.19) will take the hill for the Red Sox against Toronto’s Bowden Francis (7-3, 4.02) in the series finale.
