Vikings fill out their practice squad. Here’s a breakdown of each player

Less than 24 hours after making roster cuts, the Vikings started the process of filling out their practice squad.

Maybe the biggest thing that stood out was a pair of players not returning as to the Vikings, as running back Kene Nwangwu was claimed off waivers by the Saints, and safety Lewis Cine reportedly signed with the Jets to be a part of their practice squad.

There were a number of notable players that the Vikings brought back via practice squad.

Here’s a breakdown of each player:

OFFENSE

Lucky Jackson, receiver

Whether it was steadily improving in training camp, or making a big play in the preseason, Jackson did everything in his power to prove himself. He fell shortly simply because some of his peers also performed at a high level. That said, Jackson is worthy of a spot on the practice squad, and he could make an impact for the Vikings if called upon.

Jeshaun Jones, receiver

There isn’t a big enough sample size to make a judgement on Jones and the trajectory of his career. He came to the Vikings as an undrafted free agent and had a long touchdown catch in the preseason. There might be something there with Jones and it’s worth finding out.

Thayer Thomas, receiver

It seemed as if Thomas was in contention to make the team before suffering a concussion during joint practices. He’s a crisp route runner and possesses some ability as a punt returner. Though it’s hard to envision Thomas carving out a niche with the Vikings, he provides some depth at the position, which is valuable in and of itself.

Robert Tonyan, tight end

If it weren’t for him having to deal with back spasms in the early stages of training camp, Tonyan might’ve made the team outright. Instead, he returns to the Vikings via the practice squad, and there is a good chance he gets elevated on game days.

N’Keal Harry, tight end

As a project player that recently switched positions, Harry might have some untapped potential in his massive 6-foot-4, 225-pound frame. Will he turn into something for the Vikings down the road? That remains to be seen.

Tyrese Robinson, offensive lineman

There were some flashes from Robinson in the preseason and that is why the Vikings brought him back. The fact that the interior of the offensive line has struggled bodes well for Robinson getting a shot at some point.

DEFENSE

Jonah Williams, defensive lineman

It was a surprise that Williams failed to make the team given his experience. Though the Vikings opted for a youth movement on the defensive line, Williams will bide his time, on the practice squad, and he could easily play in a pinch he’s needed.

Andre Carter II, edge rusher

It hasn’t worked out for Carter since he was brought in as prized undrafted free agent. That said, the Vikings clearly still have some belief in him, and now Carter gets an opportunity to continue grow under the tutelage of defensive coordinator Brian Flores. Who know? Maybe it clicks for him.

Nahshon Wright, cornerback

There wasn’t much of a chance for Wright to make a name for himself after arriving with the Vikings via trade midway through training camp. He will cut his teeth on the practice squad with hopes of eventually cracking the active roster. The size is certainly there in his imposing 6-foot-4, 195-pound frame.

Jaylin Williams, cornerback

After spending time on the practice squad in the past, it makes sense that Williams is sticking around for the foreseeable future. He has some experience in the system and that is a big reason the Vikings wanted to keep him.
