According to Herald sources, the Pats re-signed wide receiver Matt Landers and running back Terrell Jennings to their practice squad. Landers signed with the team last week, a young, developmental player at 6-foot-4 with sub-4.4 speed. Jennings spent the entire summer at Patriots training camp as an undrafted rookie and was released Tuesday with Landers.
Other recently released Patriots are not returning, however. Quarterback Bailey Zappe has agreed to sign to the Chiefs’ practice squad, according to reports. Offensive lineman Atonio Mafi, a 2023 fifth-round pick, is not expected to return to New England, per source. Ex-defensive lineman Sam Roberts, a 2022 sixth-rounder, is signing to the Bears’ practice squad with the understanding he will be promoted for Week 1, according to ESPN.
The Patriots have at most 14 more practice-squad spots left to fill, and four active roster spots to clear after claiming four outside players off waivers Wednesday.
On Tuesday, the Pats released Zappe, Mafi, Jennings, Landers, S Joshuah Bledsoe, T Kellen Diesch, OL Liam Fornadel, LB Joe Giles-Harris, RB Kevin Harris, LB Kobe Jones, DE Jotham Russell, K Chad Ryland, S A.J. Thomas, CB Shaun Wade, WR David Wallis and TE Mitchell Wilcox.
