Passenger dies in crash at St. Paul intersection with traffic lights out due to storm
A man in his 90s died after an early Wednesday crash at a St. Paul intersection darkened by street lights and traffic lights inoperable since a power outage from a storm, according to police.
The driver of a Dodge Journey was north on Lexington Parkway and struck a Ford Transit van going east on Como Avenue just after 5:15 a.m., said Sgt. Mike Ernster, a police spokesman.
The van rolled and came to rest on its side. A passenger, the man in his 90s, was taken by St. Paul Fire medics to Regions Hospital and died of his injuries.
The van’s driver had minor injuries. The driver of the Dodge is cooperating with the investigation, and police don’t suspect alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash, Ernster said.
Multiple rounds of severe thunderstorms brought heavy rain, hail and winds of 60-plus mph on Monday night and early Tuesday morning, downing trees and power lines in the Twin Cities and causing power outages.
