Stillwater, STA, other schools cancel because of power outage
Stillwater Area Public School District canceled school for Stillwater Area High School students on Tuesday because of the power outage.
Students who arrived at school for the 7:40 a.m. start were sent home at 9:45 a.m. after the power was not restored.
The power outage caused a two-hour late start at Oak-Land Middle School in Lake Elmo. School was slated to start at 7:50 a.m., but the start was delayed because there was no power. After power was restored, school officially began at 9:50 a.m., a district spokeswoman said.
School also was canceled at St. Thomas Academy, where most of the campus remained without power on Tuesday.
“After reaching out to Xcel Energy and the Mendota Heights Police Department and receiving conflicting information on when power will be restored, we have determined that it will be challenging to have a productive day of learning,” school officials wrote in a note posted on the school’s website.
School officials said they would “continue to meet with all of the entities involved in the outage and will provide updates as we receive them. Thank you for your understanding and patience.”
School officials also asked parents to share the information with other parents because the school’s text-alert system was affected by the power outage.
Visitation School, the private Catholic school in Mendota Heights, also was closed on Tuesday because of the outage. Students and parents were told to “see communications from coaches regarding after-school activities,” according to a message posted on the school’s website.
