Red Sox designate left-hander for assignment ahead of Blue Jays series

The Red Sox announced they have designated left-hander Joely Rodriguez for assignment and called up right-hander Brad Keller from Triple-A Worcester ahead of Monday’s doubleheader against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Rodriguez had originally been added to the big league roster on Friday, and at the time manager Alex Cora said they called him up so the club would have a second lefty to pair with Brennan Bernardino in the later innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Rodriguez appeared in all three games against Arizona, allowing one run over 2.2 innings of work.

By swapping Keller in for Rodriguez Boston will instead prioritize having additional long-relief options to help get through a stretch of five games in four days.

Nick Pivetta will take the ball Monday afternoon when the suspended June 26 game continues with one out in the top of the second inning, but both Monday night and Tuesday’s starters are to be determined. Keller could conceivably start one of those games, as could Cooper Criswell, who was originally announced as Tuesday’s starter before the club re-shuffled its plans.

As expected, the Red Sox also announced Danny Jansen will sub in for Reese McGuire at catcher when the suspended game resumes. The full updated lineup for Monday afternoon is as follows.

Jarren Duran CF

David Hamilton 2B

Wilyer Abreu RF

Rafael Devers 3B
