Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett sustained a right shoulder injury during his only series in Sunday’s preseason finale at Washington, but could have returned for another drive, according to coach Jerod Mayo.

“He would’ve been able to continue,” Mayo said after the 20-10 defeat.
Mayo did not provide a detailed update on Brissett, who finished 2-of-4 for 19 yards and was later ruled as questionable with the shoulder injury. Mayo added the coaching staff planned to pull Brissett after a drive or two.
The veteran journeyman was injured on a sack he took on his third dropback and the Patriots’ sixth play from scrimmage. After the sack, he attempted two more throws, completing a six-yard pass over the middle to tight end Jaheim Bell before launching a deep ball down the left sideline that K.J. Osborn couldn’t snag with one hand. According to NBC broadcast, Brissett’s shoulder was not examined on the sideline.
“He said he was good,” Mayo said. “We’ll find out tomorrow.”
Mayo is scheduled to speak with reporters Monday at 9:30 a.m. Over the past few weeks, he has been consistent in claiming Brissett and first-round rookie Drake Maye are competing for the starting quarterback job. Brissett started all three preseason games and took all of the starting reps in every training camp practice until last Wednesday.
In the same post-game press conference, Mayo referred to Maye as the team’s “second-best quarterback,” indicating Brissett may be the favorite to start Week 1 at Cincinnati, pending his injury status.
Earlier Sunday, in an interview posted to Yahoo Sports, Patriots offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt described Brissett as “way more equipped for opening day.”
