Boston region may see ‘severe thunderstorms,’ flooding and hail early in the week

Some severe weather early in the week may pose a risk of damaging thunderstorms, localized flooding and hail before the Boston region heads for drier weather later on, the National Weather Service forecasted.

“(Monday) there’s the potential for some strong to severe thunderstorms, along with heavy downpours that could produce localized flooding,” said Bill Leatham, a meteorologist with NWS in Norton. “And what I mean by strong to severe thunderstorms, we’re talking strong to potentially damaging wind gusts, which could knock down trees, take down power, that kind of thing, and the potential for some large hail.”

On Monday, Leatham said, the highest risk for severe thunderstorms will occur from around noon to 9 p.m. NWS also forecasts a chance for storms Wednesday, while the rest of the week appears dry.

As far as flooding, hail and damaging weather are concerned, Leatham said, the localized areas that may be hit are uncertain but “ingredients are all there” on Monday.

During any storms, the meteorologist said, residents are encouraged to have a plan for when they are outdoors, make sure to receive any alerts for incoming severe weather, and avoid flooded roadways.

“If there is a thunderstorm and you’re outside, your best bet is to try to seek shelter and head indoors,” said Leatham.

Forecasts also warn of a risk of patchy fog Monday night and Tuesday morning around the Boston area.

Temperatures appear close to “seasonable levels,” Leatham said, with the high on Monday around mid-70s and reaching the low 80s on Tuesday. Temperatures are expected to climb up further Wednesday, with a high of 88 degrees amid the rain making for a muggy day.

“Then as we’re getting later into the week, we’re going to be behind the front that moves through on Wednesday, and that’s going to bring our temperatures down,” said Leatham. “And we have much more nice weather, like we had this weekend, temperature wise and humidity level wise.”

Thursday and Friday forecast show highs in the low 70s and clearer weather heading into the weekend, before preliminary chances of rain appear again on Saturday.
