Demolition of Kellogg Boulevard/Third Street bridge will begin in earnest on Monday

The work of demolishing the Third Street/Kellogg Boulevard Bridge will begin on Monday as part of a three-year project to rebuild the deteriorating span linking downtown St. Paul and the East Side.

The bridge officially closed on July 29 with Kellogg Boulevard — from Broadway Street in Lowertown to Mounds Boulevard on Dayton’s Bluff — being shut down to traffic.

The demolition will begin on the section of the bridge over Commercial Street, including the parking lot and access to the Bruce Vento Nature Sanctuary and Wakan Tipi construction area. Commercial Street will be shut down for all vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian traffic for two weeks with detours slated to be on Seventh Street.

The Public Works Department says to expect significant construction noise, including jackhammering, as well as frequent truck hauling between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.

The new bridge is scheduled to open by summer 2027.
