Trump continues to fall behind Harris in national polls, surveys taken ahead of DNC show

The newest polling shows former President Donald Trump’s years-old presidential campaign is falling behind the political insurgency represented by Vice President Kamala Harris’ historic and sudden ascent to the top of Democratic politics.

Harris, according to an Economist/YouGov poll of more than 1,300 registered voters released on Wednesday, leads Trump nationally by three points. The VP is up from a two-point lead the same pollsters found in a survey released last week.

While the same pollsters found President Joe Biden was trailing the former president by two points in the days just before he announced he would not seek the party nomination, when they asked “who do you plan to vote for in the presidential election” last week, 46% of voters picked Harris, compared to 43% who prefer Trump. A further 3% said they are backing independent Robert F. Kennedy Jr, while independent candidate Cornel West and Green Party candidate Jill Stein both polled at 0%.

That result is in line with a Morning Consult survey of more than 11,500 registered voters released on Monday, which shows the 45th President behind by a full four points in a two-way race, up from three points compared to a poll conducted the week prior.

“Ahead of this week’s Democratic National Convention, Harris leads Trump, 48% to 44%, up 1 percentage point over the past week and tying a record high set earlier this month. Harris has not trailed Trump in a single daily tracking survey since we first updated this page with their head-to-head matchup in late July,” those pollsters noted.

Both polls showed Harris with a nearly split approval rating while a majority of voters express negative sentiments regarding the former president.

Trump, according to the Economist/YouGov survey, is viewed as very or somewhat unfavorable by 53% of polled voters, compared to 43% who see him favorably. Harris, on the other hand, sees a ratio of 45% to 46%

The three-time Republican nominee has seen his net-negative rating improve week over week in Morning Consult’s survey, but he’s still way behind the new kid on the ballot.

“More voters than not hold favorable opinions about Harris (50% to 45%), a record-high net favorability rating that keeps her above water for the fourth week running. Meanwhile, Trump’s net favorability improved to 5 points underwater, continuing an upward trend over the past two weeks,” those pollsters wrote.

Fact check: Harris did not vote to ‘cut Medicare,’ despite Trump’s claim

Where before the VP’s political fate seemed tethered to her boss’ sinking numbers, Harris seems to have broken away from the rest of the political world when it comes to popularity, according to Morning Consult.

“Since securing presumptive status as the Democratic presidential nominee, Harris has become significantly more popular than Biden, Trump and her partisan compatriots in Congress,” pollsters said.

National polling averages maintained by RealClearPolitics and 538 show Harris leading Trump by 1.6 points and 3.3 points, respectively.
