North Andover murder-suicide: Mother allegedly stabs infant son before taking her own life
A 35-year-old mother allegedly stabbed her 9-month-old son to death before taking her own life at a North Andover home on Monday in what investigators are calling an “apparent murder-suicide.”
The Tuesday afternoon development comes as authorities continue investigating the “unimaginable crime” at the Turnpike Street home in the Merrimack Valley.
Essex County District Attorney Paul Tucker and North Andover Police Chief Charles Gray identified the deceased as Jennifer T. Paez, 35, and her nine-month-old baby boy, Valentino Paez.
“While everyone is, understandably, still struggling to comprehend what went so terribly wrong here, our deepest sympathies go out to the family of Jennifer Paez and her son, Valentino,” Tucker said in a release. “I would also like to thank the North Andover Police Department, the Massachusetts State Police, and all those responding for helping this family and this community in the wake of this unimaginable crime.”
North Andover police responded to an emergency call at 5:15 p.m. Monday, finding the mother and her infant son with “apparent knife wounds,” according to authorities.
Jennifer was pronounced dead on scene, they said, while Valentine was rushed via ambulance to Lawrence General Hospital where medical personnel declared the boy dead at around 6:30 p.m.
“Early indicators” in the investigation suggest “Jennifer wounded her son and then took her own life,” the release states.
“I would like to recognize the hard-working officers of the North Andover Police Department that responded to this tragic incident,” Gray said in the release, “as well as our partners with the Essex County District Attorney’s Office, Massachusetts State Police, Andover Police, North Andover Fire Department, the North Andover Community Support coordinator, and Lawrence General Hospital for their assistance.”
