Frankie Capan III’s latest runner-up finish has North Oaks’ product on verge of PGA Tour card
It’s not official — not quite yet, anyway.
The PGA Tour and Korn Ferry Tour have conservative calculations they use to declare when a player has cinched a PGA Tour card — given to the top 30 players on the Korn Ferry Tour’s season-long standings at year’s end.
Frankie Capan III is in 12th place on the season-long list following his tie for second place in the Magnit Championship on Sunday in New Jersey.
The North Oaks’ product now has a pair of runner-up finishes this year and three top fives. With this weekend’s performance came another 184 points, pushing his mark to 1,013 on the season. That would’ve easily been enough to finish in the top 30 in past seasons and will certainly be this time, as well. He has a nearly 400-point lead on the golfer currently sitting at No. 31 in the standings.
With four events to play, yes, it seems as though Capan has no work left to do to become the first player in recent memory to represent Minnesota on the PGA Tour next season.
Sunday marked another major step toward that milestone. For the third time this season, Capan was in a final grouping on Sunday. But he struggled on his front nine, firing a 1-over 37 heading out to seemingly fall out of contention.
But the 24-year-old caught fire on the final nine, birdieing holes No. 11-13 in succession and then capping off the tournament with a birdie on No. 18 to get to 15-under for the week.
With that final birdie, it’s likely more of a case of when — not if — the Tour announces that Capan’s spot on the top professional tour next season is secured. What a moment that will be.
