Report: Vikings agree to deal with veteran cornerback Stephon Gilmore

After meeting with the Vikings last week, veteran cornerback Stephon Gilmore has decided he wants to play in Minnesota.

While most Minnesotans were still asleep on Sunday morning, the Vikings quietly agreed to a 1-year deal with Gilmore. The deal could be worth up to $10 million, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, and also includes $7 million guaranteed.

This has been about a week in the making after Gilmore, 33, visited TCO Performance Center in Eagan. Though he initially left without a deal, there was clearly mutual interest, and the Vikings were encouraged that the might be able to get something done with Gilmore.

“We had a great visit with him,” head coach Kevin O’Connell said last week when asked about Gilmore. “He’s absolutely a guy that we have such respect for. We’re going to continue to stay in contact. Hopefully at some point we can figure out exactly what that’s going to look like whether he’s going to be here or not so we can make a plan moving forward.”

The addition of Gilmore provides the Vikings with some much needed depth in a secondary that has been navigated a lack of depth at cornerback. As soon as he steps into the building, Gilmore will be among the most accomplished players on the defense.

After being selected by the Buffalo Bills with the No. 10 pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, Gilmore has gone on to have an illustrious career. He was named Defensive Player of the Year during his time with the New England Patriots and has also played for the Carolina Panthers, the Indianapolis Colts, and most recently, the Dallas Cowboys.
