After losing rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy for the season this week, the Vikings added some depth on Friday afternoon, signing young quarterback Matt Corral to a contract.

Though the addition of Corral more than likely has no impact what the Vikings plan to do moving forward — veteran quarterback Sam Darnold is still the unquestioned starter — it’s somewhat notable considering he was selected in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

After a putting up big numbers at Ole Miss in college, Corral was drafted by the Carolina Panthers before spending some time with the New England Patriots. He has yet to appear in an NFL game and most recently played for the Birmingham Stallions of the UFL.

It’s unclear if Corral is going to be given a legitimate chance to make the team or if he’s simply an extra body to help the Vikings get through the rest of the preseason.

Could he battle veteran quarterback Nick Mullens for the backup role? Could he unseat young quarterback Jaren Hall for a spot on the practice squad. Those questions will be figured out over the next couple of weeks.

The roster move means McCarthy will not be able to play for the Vikings at any point this season. He would’ve been eligible to return had the Vikings decided to place him on their initial 53-man roster. He had surgery this week to fully repair a torn meniscus in his right knee.
