Red Sox lineup: Casas back from IL, Bernardino opening bullpen game

Triston Casas will be back in the Red Sox lineup against the Orioles in Baltimore on Friday night, for the first time since suffering what he said his doctor described as a “freak” injury to his rib cartilage during an at-bat on April 20.

It’s not the only roster shakeup of the day. In addition to designating Dom Smith for assignment, the Red Sox optioned right-hander Chase Shugart to Triple-A Worcester in order to activate fellow righty Cooper Criswell from the 7-day COVID-related injured list.

Criswell, however, won’t be starting Friday night’s game as the Red Sox initially hoped. Instead, they plan to go with left-handed reliever Brennan Bernardino, who will open the contest.

The Orioles, meanwhile, will have All-Star starting pitcher Corbin Burnes on the mound. Over 24 starts this season, the 2021 NL Cy Young owns a 2.71 ERA and 1.049 WHIP, with 173 strikeouts and 35 walks over 149.2 innings. He’s faced the Red Sox twice this season, and held them one earned run (a homer) and one unearned on five hits, five walks, and 11 strikeouts over 14 innings.
