New Car Preview: 2025 BMW M5 Touring

The American automotive landscape is about to welcome a game-changer, and it’s arriving in the form of the 2025 BMW M5 Touring. For the first time, BMW is bringing its high-performance M5 wagon to the United States straight from the factory, offering car enthusiasts an electrifying combination of power, practicality, and luxury.

A Legacy of Power

BMW’s M5 Touring may be new to U.S. shores, but it carries a legacy of power that dates back to the 1992 E34 and the 2007 E61 generations. This latest iteration is more than just a nostalgic nod to those earlier models—it’s a beast of its own. Under the hood, the 2025 M5 Touring boasts a plug-in hybrid powertrain that delivers an impressive 717 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque. To put that into perspective, it outpaces the Audi RS 6 Avant by 96 horsepower and 111 pound-feet of torque, making it the most potent wagon in its class.

Unmatched Performance

At the heart of this powerhouse is a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine paired with an electric motor embedded in the eight-speed automatic transmission. This setup produces 557 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque from the V8 alone, with the electric motor contributing an additional 194 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque. The all-wheel-drive system is standard, ensuring that the M5 Touring grips the road with precision. The wagon rockets from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds—only a tenth slower than the M5 sedan.

Practicality Meets Luxury

But the M5 Touring is not just about speed. BMW has designed this wagon with practicality in mind, offering a spacious cargo area that measures 17.7 cubic feet with the rear seats up and a whopping 57.6 cubic feet with them folded down. While the cargo space might be slightly less than the RS 6 Avant’s, the M5 Touring compensates with a 50:50 weight distribution and model-specific underfloor bracing for enhanced handling and stability. Just like its M5 sedan sibling, the new M5 Touring will tip the scale at a healthy weight coming in at 5,530 pounds as BMW’s preliminary estimate, which is 140 pounds more than the sedan.

Inside, the M5 Touring is equipped with a Sky Lounge Panoramic Roof that stretches from just behind the windscreen to the rear of the vehicle, adding a touch of elegance and openness to the cabin. The rear seats split 40:20:40 and include a pass-through section for added versatility. A hands-free liftgate adds convenience, making loading and unloading easier.

Competitive Pricing and Future Prospects

Priced at $122,675, the 2025 BMW M5 Touring offers a more affordable option than the RS 6 Avant, while still packing more power and luxury features. Built in Dingolfing, Germany, the M5 Touring will be available later this year, marking a new era for BMW in the U.S. market.

As enthusiasts eagerly await the arrival of this performance wagon, speculation abounds about whether BMW might also bring the all-electric i5 Touring to America. While some might question the logic, BMW has a history of defying expectations—much like Audi did when it brought the RS 6 Avant to the U.S. market.

In the world of high-performance wagons, the 2025 BMW M5 Touring is a bold statement that BMW isn’t just listening to its customers; it’s paving the way for a new chapter in driving excellence.
