If the presidential election were held today — with or without third party options — then Vice President Kamala Harris would become the first woman elected to the nation’s highest office by a comfortable margin, according to new polling.

An Emerson College poll released Thursday shows that former President Donald Trump’s long-standing lead over President Joe Biden has evaporated, disappearing about as quickly as Biden’s candidacy did after his historically bad performance in the first presidential debate.

“The first Emerson College Polling national survey following President Biden’s decision not to seek re-election finds Vice President Kamala Harris leading Donald Trump 50% to 46%. Five percent of likely voters are undecided. With undecided voters’ support allocated, Harris continues to lead by four, 52% to 48%,” pollsters wrote.

“With third-party candidates on the ballot, Harris and Trump’s support evenly decreases by two points, Harris to 48% and Trump to 44%. Four percent support Robert F. Kennedy Jr.,” they wrote.

According to Spencer Kimball, the executive director of Emerson College Polling, the slight shift in support among all voters from Trump’s camp to Harris’ is underscored by remarkable movement among voters under 30, those over 70, and independents.

“Likely voters under 30 have shifted toward Harris by nine points, 56% of whom supported Biden, 65% now support Harris. Voters over 70 also support Harris over Trump, 51% to 48% — last month they broke 50% to 48% for Trump,” he said. “Independents break for Harris, 46% to 45%, flipping since last month when likely independent voters broke for Trump 45% to 44%.”

Emerson College’s poll of about 1,000 likely voters shows Harris leading outside of the 3% margin of error, and tracks closely with a much larger Morning Consult survey of 11,778 registered voters which was released earlier in the week. According to that poll, Harris is up by three points over Trump, a slight slump over the previous week.

“Harris leads Trump, 47% to 44%. That margin is down 1 percentage point from her record 4-point lead in our last update. Harris has not trailed Trump in a single daily tracking survey since we first updated this page with their head-to-head matchup in late July,” pollsters wrote.

According to Morning Consult, the “Harris Honeymoon” is far from over.

“For the third week running since launching her presidential campaign, voters remained more likely to say they heard something positive (47%) than negative (33%) about Harris by a double-digit margin. Her net buzz rating (the share of voters who heard something positive minus the share who heard something negative) bests Trump’s rating from last week by a whopping 33 points,” they wrote.

Trump would need to turn to more friendly territory in order to find a recent poll that shows him winning. A Fox News survey released Thursday shows the former president up by a single point, but that’s only in a theoretical race that doesn’t include third party options.

“Vice President Kamala Harris trails former President Donald Trump by one percentage point in the latest Fox News national survey, 49-50%. Last month, she was also behind Trump by one point, 48-49% — as was President Joe Biden, with the same 48-49% result,” Fox wrote.

“In the expanded presidential ballot, Harris and Trump received 45% each, while support for Kennedy stands at 6%. All others are at 1%,” they wrote.

The general election is scheduled for Nov. 5.
