Vikings rookie J.J. McCarthy will undergo knee surgery to repair meniscus tear
J.J. McCarthy has a meniscus tear in his right knee, according to head coach Kevin O’Connell, and will undergo surgery to figure out the next steps in the recovery process. There is currently no timeline on when McCarthy will be able to return to the field.
“That will be something determined during the procedure based upon whether it can just be a clean up or potentially a repair,” O’Connell said. “That won’t be able to be determined until after that procedure takes place, so I would just be speculating on a timeline for a return at this point.”
The injury for McCarthy occurred during the preseason game between the Vikings and the Las Vegas Raiders on Saturday afternoon at U.S. Bank Stadium. He completed 11 of 17 passes for 188 yards and a pair of touchdowns while getting a majority of the reps under center.
Though he walked off the field after his final snap without anything noticeably wrong with him, McCarthy complained of soreness in his right knee when he arrived at TCO Performance Center on Monday afternoon. He went through a number of tests in the aftermath to reveal the meniscus tear.
This is devastating blow for the Vikings considering McCarthy had performed so well throughout training camp.
“We don’t know the severity yet and that is honestly where we’re at right now,” O’Connell said. “Hopefully we’re having a shorter timeline than a longer timeline.”
