Celtics schedule for 2024 NBA Cup group stage announced

The Celtics’ schedule for the NBA’s rebranded in-season tournament was unveiled Tuesday.

For Boston, the tournament – now known as the 2024 Emirates NBA Cup – will begin Tuesday, Nov. 12 with its first group-stage game against the Atlanta Hawks at TD Garden.

The Celtics then will host the Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday, Nov. 19 before hitting the road for games against the Washington Wizards on Friday, Nov. 22 and the Chicago Bulls on Friday, Nov. 29.

The games against the Hawks, Cavs and Wizards are scheduled for 7 p.m. ET tipoffs, with the one at Chicago beginning at 8 p.m. ET.

The winners of each of the six five-team groups, plus one wild card from each conference, will advance to the single-elimination knockout rounds. The quarterfinals will be played in home arenas on Dec. 10 and 11, with the semifinals and finals taking place in Las Vegas on Dec. 14 and 17, respectively.

Last season, the Celtics won their group – going 3-1 and running up the score in their final game against the Bulls to earn the point-differential tiebreaker – before stumbling at Indiana in the quarterfinals. The Pacers wound up losing in the inaugural tournament championship to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Fenway Sports Group ‘seriously considering’ buying Celtics, per report

All games played during the group stage will count as regular-season games, as will quarterfinal and semifinal matchups. The NBA differentiated tournament games from standard ones by having teams wear alternate jerseys and play on special, often vibrantly colored courts. The Celtics played on a dark green surface with a strip of their traditional parquet running through the center, while other teams changed their courts to shades of blue, red, gray, orange, yellow and purple.

The league has not yet announced whether the unique courts will return for the NBA Cup.

An announcement on the full regular-season schedule is expected in the coming days. The Athletic’s Shams Charania reported the dates and opponents for several non-Cup Celtics games earlier in the week: Opening Night banner-raising against the New York Knicks on Oct. 22, Christmas Day against the Philadelphia 76ers, and NBA Finals rematches against the Dallas Mavericks on Jan. 25 (road) and Feb. 6 (home).
