A truck struck and damaged a railroad bridge in St. Paul on Tuesday, and traffic continues to be detoured in the area.

St. Paul officers were called just after 7 a.m. to the 2500 block of Como Avenue in the St. Anthony Park neighborhood. They found the bridge just west of Minnesota 280 significantly damaged after a roll-off truck crashed into it, said Sgt. Mike Ernster, a St. Paul police spokesman.

The roll-off truck has a mechanical lift used for the roll-off dumpsters it transports, Ernster said of preliminary information. The lift was in an upright position when the truck tried to drive under the bridge, and the lift piece jammed into the bridge. No injuries were reported.

Como Avenue is temporarily closed from Eustis Street to 33rd Avenue in Minneapolis, and people should use a detour of Eustis Street to Larpenteur Avenue to 33rd Avenue, according to St. Paul Public Works.

Bridge inspectors and railroad personnel were working to determine the level of damage “and want it to be safe before reopening the roadway,” Ernster said Tuesday. “This process could take 24 to 48 hours and we expect the road to be closed during this time frame or longer if there is a major deficiency found in the structure of the bridge.”
